Milestones

The milestones are coming thick and fast at the moment! I am very proud to now be under the 100kg mark, weighing in this morning at 97.9kg!

I'm feeling really good, but there are still things I need to work on. While I am getting my fluids in, I'm not great at the regular eating and I tend to eat my food too fast, and not have enough food to keep me full. I had a bad experience at Hans Cafe the other day which resulted in me vomiting for the first time since surgery (not just retching). I think it was the rice that was too dried out and the beef too spicy, but whatever it was, I definitely felt a lot better once it was out of my system!

I have been going to the gym for the last couple of weeks more frequently, and have started a weights routine to try and get my stomach and arms into better condition, as I am definitely starting to notice the excess skin, and am becoming a little self-conscious of it all.

I've sent my polar heart rate monitor and watch off to be serviced as they stopped working a little while ago. While my fitbit is great for everyday walking and activity, I love my heart rate monitor for when Im at the gym and doing cross-training. I'm also thinking of doing some Personal Training at my gym, just to mix things up a bit with my weights.

I went back to work on Thursday after two weeks holidays, and I had so many lovely compliments, especially from guys who aren't usually the type of people to comment on appearance, which made it even more unexpected and pleasant.

So what's next - well I am loaded down with uni summer school (In fact I should be doing my assignment right now!), but I need to keep getting into the gym, and hopefully the weight will keep dropping off me. My goal weight is 85kg, but I really feel that I could get to 75kg if I keep this up, so I want to give it my all.

Three month checkup

I had my three month checkup at the clinic on Monday and everything went really well. I weighed in on their scales at 100.9kg! My incisions have healed pretty well, no major pains to report, and the doctor said that I was doing great. I also had my photo taken - they like to take a photo at each appointment to track our progress visually as well.

I met with the dietician whose main concern was my lack of protein intake, and my continuing lack of interest in breakfast (I can't help it, I'm just not a morning person!) I do need to make a real effort to get my vitamins down everyday and be a little more conscious about my food, especially now that I am getting hungry all the damn time.

Lastly I met with the exercise physiologist, and we took all of my measurements and stats. I had them taken a week before surgery (so around Sep 14), and I was so impressed with the improvements! My body fat percentage has dropped from 54.2% to 49.8%, and my FFM (muscle mass) has only dropped from 56.4kg to 51.1kg. The EP said that normally in this first three months for most people, around 50% of the weight lost is usually muscle, but mine seems to be predominantly fat which is a really good result. My resting heart rate has dropped two seconds a minutes.

Body Measurements
(Part of body) - (Measurement 14/9) - (Measurement 17/12)
Chest - 123cm - 119.5cm
Waist - 122cm - 119cm (this one doesn't sound like a lot but my body shape has completely changed, and my upper stomach is completely deflated which I think has caused the part around my belly button to stay the same)
Hips - 140 - 125
Biceps - L 40 R 39.5 - L 33 R 33
Thighs - L75.5 R 78 - L 65 R 65.5
Calf - L 43.5 R 45.5 - L 39 R 40.5

I've been back to the gym a couple of times now, and am starting to get back into the swing of things. I know I definitely need to get a weights program happening, and possibly some PT because I have no tone in my legs or arms, which I'm feeling a little uncomfortable with. I did some ab workouts yesterday and boy can I feel them today! It's all for a good cause though!

Some comparison photos

My weigh in this morning was 101.9kg - so close to the magic double figures! I figured it was time for some comparison photos!

Me at the Bariatric clinic's annual cocktail party! They put a function on every year for the sleeve patients from the year to show off how they've done! I was one of the newbies there, but it was a lot of fun!

Update time - 23kg lost!

I've been a little quiet recently, just getting on with things. The usual mainly - work, going to basketball games, spending time with hubby. I'm getting quite a few comments now about how much weight I've lost and how good I look. People at work have commented, and people I bump into who I haven't seen in a while are taken aback.

I'm starting to feel really good about myself. I can notice the changes in my body, especially these last three or four kilos. As of this evening I'm down to 103.5kg, bringing my total weight lost to 23 kilograms. I'm taking my measurements as well, but possibly need to find a better way to track them outside of fitbit, because while it gives me a pretty graph, I'd really like a table to see the information set out.

Day 50

Today is my 50th day of being sleeved. So many mini milestones - and I am soooo close to my next one I can taste it. As of this morning I weigh 107.1kg, just 700g short of my first 20kg lost!

I am hanging out for this, and yet I still can't believe that this is all happening. It doesn't feel quite real, like it is happening to someone else. I have been really lucky with my recovery. Besides the reflux, I haven't had any complications, and just feel normal, yet I am constantly losing weight, virtually without trying. I thought that I would feel like I was missing out, not eating very much while everyone else eats what they want, but it really doesn't bother me all that much.

Last night I manned the sausage sizzle at a church function and it didn't tempt me, nor did I feel like I wanted to eat one because everyone else was. The only uncomfortable situation so far has been eating at restaurants with people who don't know about the surgery, because it is so noticeable how little I eat. I went to my highschool reunion last weekend and had cottage pie because it was easy to eat texture-wise, and people asked if I felt sick because I barely touched it. Usually I come up with some excuse, but it can be a little awkward.

In other strange developments, I have begun a love affair with ice! I used to be able to drink room temperature water by the bucket load, but now can only drink ice cold drinks. And because I still am struggling with my water intake, I have discovered that shaved ice goes down perfectly! Luckily my hubby had bought me a novelty ice shaver years ago which I had barely used, so now it is getting a workout every hour of the day! Shaved ice with a spoon - helping keep my sanity alive!

6 week check up +photos

I had my 6 week check up with the specialist this morning and everything is going really well. The Dr is really impressed with my weight loss so far and how my scars are healing. The only real issue I've had is the reflux and heartburn, which he is upping my dose of Somac to twice a day to try and combat that.

My eating is still a bit topsy-turvy but I am trying to make an effort to eat meat and steamed vegetables for dinner, and lots of dairy throughout the day - cheese, yoghurts etc. I've tried eating fruit but it doesn't really agree with my tummy at the moment, but will persist with it.

So I am now done to 108.8kg, and it's probably about time I did some progress shots with a before photo as a comparison

Before - July sometime, belly rolls galore

At 109kg, 3/11/12
4/11/12 - Photo taken by hubby.
I can't see a huge difference between the photos except perhaps in my face, but I've also had a haircut since then so who knows! I am definitely feeling the difference in my tops, my stomach is a little smaller, but still a very long way to go.
