Progress Photos

Today's weigh in - 82.2kg, so I've stayed pretty steady over the last week or so. Also my body fat percentage is finally under 40%, cracking 39.9% on my scales today! I know it has only been 6 weeks since my comparison photos, and there isn't a whole lot of difference, but I thought I'd be proactive and get them up now at the beginning of the month.

Also some other not very glamorous photos of me from the past week

My style - ASOS tunic, funky Dorothy Perkins leggings, cheapo boots and a Sussans belt to cinch it in

David Lawrence dress and Portmans denim jacket. with opaque tights. The denim jacket was just for the ride home as it was starting to get a bit nippy
This one is a big deal for me to post - new bathers. I can point out all the things I hate about this picture, but I'm being brave and posting it. Bathers are by Seafolly, a steal at $20 including postage new from Seafolly's ebay store. And to make it even sweeter, they are a size 16!

How much do I eat - 7 months after gastric sleeve surgery

A lot of my friends ask me about how much I can eat now that I have had the gastric sleeve surgery. Today marks 7 months since I had the surgery, and I can definitely eat a lot more than I could in first few months. That doesn't mean my stomach has stretched though. In the first 3-6 months, your stomach has a raw wound that needs to heal, which makes it quite difficult to each much food at all. Now that my stomach has healed, this will be more like what I can actually eat on a regular basis, and possibly a tiny bit more as I reach 12 months and beyond.
Before - my special treat of nachos!

After - Unfortunately my special treat didn't sit well with me so I didn't eat more than a couple of bites

Before - Baked potato with beans and salsa
After - I ate this over about 30 minutes and managed to eat just over half of the potato

Before - Small Lime Chicken Salad from Sumo Salad
After - I have picked out all of the chicken as well as some of the salad. I only had about 15 minutes otherwise I would have probably eaten a little more

Besides some very unglamorous food photos, I have stayed around the same weight this week, hovering at high 82, low 83 kilos. The weight continues to come off, but I am not as obsessive with weighing myself as I was at the beginning of this process. I am a data-oriented person so I love seeing the numbers and tracking my progress, but it's also kind of nice to just let it do it's thing now.

A not-so-weekly update

I'm continuing to lose weight, which shouldn't be a surprise to me, but I think somehow in my head I thought the weight loss would just stop once I hit my goal weight. My current weight is 82.6kg, and I am slowly heading towards being in the 70-79kg bracket. That brings my BMI down to 28.3 as well - getting so close to being in that normal range.

Now for some pretty graphs from my fitbit tracker (click on the image for a closer look).

Reaching my goals and beyond

What to do you do when you reach your milestone? Do you celebrate? Do you set a new goal? Is the journey over? This past week I reached a big milestone for me. I set myself a goal of reaching 85kg when I had my surgery, and I am so happy to have reached that goal.

Once of the things I did when I first decided to have the surgery, was to create a goal board - a board which would provide motivation, inspiration, and remind me why I am following this path. My goal board had pictures of clothes I wanted to wear, healthy good, exercise tips, fit healthy women, babies and pregnant women, and the number 85.

My goal board was originally in my bedroom during the early weeks. I needed constant reminding about why my body was hurting so badly. Then it moved into the spare room where I get dressed in the morning, next to my makeup stand. As I got ready each morning, it was almost an affirmation, a quick glance across to keep my mind in the game. As I've gotten closer to my goal, the goal board moved to the study. For a while other things piled up in front of it, and I didn't look at it a whole lot.

Today I pulled down all of the stuff that was hiding it, and had a good look at the things I had set out for myself.

I am so much fitter than I was before. I have been taken Daisy out at night for a run, jogging several km, followed up a gentle walk at the end. It's remarkably easy to jog at this weight. I'm doing weekly Personal Training sessions at my gym, and attending gym classes like Body Balance and CXWorx

The clothes. Oh how I love the clothes. I can walk into stores and try clothes on that I could only dream about before. Nicola Finetti dresses, Sportscraft pants, a crisp Ralph Lauren shirt. Even my feet have changed, going down half a size and fitting into normal sized boots instead of  paying $300 for a wide calf version.

My food choices are a lot better. I am not a fan of takeaway food - no Hungry Jacks or KFC which were a regular item in our dinner choices. I still eat the occasional 'bad' thing, but in small amounts, irregularly. Because I can only eat small amounts of food, I like to make sure that what I do eat is excellent quality.

So what now. Well I am only 6.5 months out of surgery, so I am still in my prime weight loss zone for another 5 months or so. I'm hoping that by continuing with what I have been doing do date, that I will be able to lose another 10kg by the end of the year, and get down to 75kg. To be honest though, it's not something that I am going to worry about right now.  I love my new body, my new lifestyle, and I want to enjoy the moment. I don't want to be constantly worried about not being thin enough or not losing enough weight. My Dr at my 6 month check up said that I do not need to lose any more weight for health reasons, anything from now is just a bonus, and that is exactly how I am treating it.

In saying that, I absolutely want to keep up my fitness, and hopefully do another triathlon near the end of the year, and possibly even a short 5k fun run! Who knows what's next?!

Progress Photos

I felt like it was time to update my progress photos so I've been going through my photos on the computer. I can't even believe how big I was before this.

Six Month Progress Report

I had my six month post-surgery check up today which went really well. I started with the dietician, whose main concern was that I'm still not getting enough protein, and being able to get down my vitamins. I'm probably going to have to try a chewable multivitamin just to try and keep them down as tablets are still not my friend. The dietician also gave me some snack and simple meal ideas that I can use which I think will be helpful.

My exercise physiologist appointment was up next. The trainer is going to email me through my measurements and exercise improvements so I will post those when I get them. Although I haven't overly improved in some of the exercises such as push ups and squats, I think that's because I was quite fit at the time of my surgery, whereas I am still only just getting back into a gym routine now.

Another good thing is that of the 40kg that I have lost, only 7kg has been muscle, whereas the majority of people will lose a much higher percentage of muscle in addition to fat through the surgery. Keeping that muscle will help me in the long run with maintaining my body weight.

We talked through my current gym program, and that she'd like to see me getting my heart rate up to around the 140bpm mark, but that it doesn't have to stay at that rate the whole time. I've had my heart rate monitor serviced recently, so I will have to put it to the test!

Finally I saw a Bariatric Assessor, which is basically a GP who specialises in Bariatric Surgery. In other words, I have graduated from seeing Dr Valibhoy! My Dr was just fabulous - I wish he worked closer to where I live because I would have him as my GP any day! Just really open, friendly and happy to explain where it's needed. He basically said that I am perfect! In perfect health that is. All my areas of concern have virtually disappeared, and he is thrilled with my weight loss. He basically said that, considering my blood test results, it doesn't matter if I lose anymore weight, and that anything else I lose now is purely for aesthetics, I don't need to lose more for health reason, which is kind of incredible to hear!

We went through all of my metabolic results and the changes are enormous

Area    -    August 12    -    March 13
Weight    -    126.3    -   86
BMI    -   43    -   29
Neck Circumference    -   43    -   35
Fasting Insulin    -   28    -   9   ****
Insulin Resistance    -   6.2    -   <2 ****
Total Cholesterol    -   5.8    -   4.4

The fasting insulin and insulin resistance are particularly noteworthy, as this result shows that I am no longer insulin resistant, which will have a positive effect on my Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and my fertility! The Dr said that my results initially were very much textbook pre-diabetic, and that it has completely resolved itself! That, as well as the huge improvements in cholesterol and decrease in neck circumference (which is a factor for other issues) are really good results for me.

From the results, there are still two areas I need to work at. My HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) is still quite low at 0.8, and needs to increase to reduce my total cardiac risk ratio. The Dr said that while this component can be hereditary (my Dad has high cholesterol as well), the best way to increase HDL is through exercise, which I hadn't really heard before. That's something I'm planning on doing anyhow, so I'm not too worried about it but will keep it in mind.

The second thing is that my B12 levels have dropped considerably. Back in August they were 329 and at the moment they are 146, and I believe normal levels are over 200. This has come up couple of times over the years so perhaps I just don't absorb it well, but the Dr has given me a script for three B12 injection which one of my friends who is a nurse can administer to me over the next few weeks.

The Dr did two things that really made me smile during our consult. Firstly he brought in 30kg of hand weights for me to hold (which I nearly dropped), and then made me hop onto the scales. It was still 10kg off what my starting weight was, and he told me to visualise what I was having to carry around with all that extra weight.

The second thing he did was show me a poster on the wall. I had glanced at it in the waiting room a few times but never really paid it much attention. He pointed to the outline on the right hand side with the BMI of 35-40 and said to me, "That's what you used to be". Then he pointed to the second from the left image and said, "That's who you are now". It was quite an emotional moment.

So things are really going well. I am still one kilogram away from my initial goal weight, but I have set myself a goal to be down to 75kg by the years end. I hope it will be quicker than that, but I'm not going to let myself worry about it. As the good doctor said today, my body is fine how it is now. I am just going to take what comes and do my best to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Milestones everywhere

Today I hit a big milestone - not the milestone, that is still 1.5kg away, but I have officially lost 40kg! I look and feel completely different. I know some of these posts get repetitive, but it's hard to be down on something that is so utterly life changing. I took a couple of pics today to celebrate. Proper progress photos will come next week or when I hit my 85kg goal.
